Beginner's Guide to Winemaking

Making wine is an enjoyable hobby. Just follow the instructions and in as little as three weeks you will be drinking your own delicious wine

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT TO MAKE 6 BOTTLES OF WINE

VWP Steriliser
1 gall/5 litre Glass Demijohn, PET Demijohn or 5 litre Plastic Fermenter
Bung & Airlock
Syphon
Corks or Plastic Stoppers
Bottles

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT TO MAKE 30 BOTTLES OF WINE,

VWP Steriliser
25 litre Fermenter
Bung & Airlock
Syphon
Corks or Plastic Stoppers
Bottles

(In addition we strongly recommend a Hydrometer/Jar, Thermometer and it is useful to have a second Fermenting vessel)

WHAT DO I DO? Firstly, it is important to sterilise the equipment. Secondly try and maintain a constant temperature between 21 - 26oC (69 -79oF)

STEPS TO MAKING A GOOD WINE

(1) Clean and sterilise all equipment
(2) Add concentrate (and with some kits sugar) and water to the fermenting vessel
(3) Add yeast sachet and leave to ferment, watching the temperature. The yeast will turn the grape juice (and sugar) into alcohol
Carbon dioxide is given off and while this is happening you will see bubbles coming through your airlock
(4) Once this fermentation has been completed which usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks, the wine can be stabilised to prevent any re-fermenting and finings to clear the wine can be added
(5) The wine can then be syphoned off the sediment and transferred into bottles
(6) The bottles need to be either corked (there are several corking devices available) or sealed with plastic stoppers for short term storing. For the finishing touch shrink caps and labels can be purchased but this again is optional
(7) Your wine can be drunk once clear but will improve with keeping.

HOW LONG WILL THE PROCESS TAKE
To make your first batch will probably take 1 hour. However, once you are used to making wine we would say no longer than 1/2 hour. We would also like to mention that apart from the bottling side, it takes just as long to make 6 bottles as it does to make 30 bottles, so we strongly recommend you make the larger quantity. After all 6 bottles doesn't go very far!!!!
